Overview

An unforgettable seven-day journey combining history, culture, Mediterranean scenery and Saharan adventure, from Tunis and Carthage to Kairouan, Tozeur, Douz, Matmata and El Jem.

Detailed itinerary

1

Day 1 — Arrival in Tunis

Airport welcome, transfer to your hotel in Tunis, dinner and overnight stay.

View the detailed programme

Arrival at Tunis-Carthage international airport. Meet your guide and transfer to your hotel in the capital. Though Tunisia is the smallest country in the Maghreb, it has a remarkably rich history spanning more than 3,000 years — from the Carthaginian empire, whose capital was Carthage, to the country's modern era. This blend of cultures can be seen in the many remains scattered across the territory. Dinner (depending on your arrival time) and overnight stay (Hotel El Belvedere Fourati 4* or similar).

2

Day 2 — Tunis Medina • Bardo Museum • Carthage • Sidi Bou Said

The Tunis Medina, the Bardo mosaics, ancient Carthage and the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said.

View the detailed programme

Breakfast, then head to the Medina of Tunis, the old city, to wander its narrow streets and discover its terraces, shops and typical architecture, with the chance to shop in the souk. Continue to the Bardo National Museum, a former Ottoman-era palace that houses one of the world's finest collections of Roman mosaics. Arrive in La Goulette for the included lunch — typical cuisine with a sea view. Continue to Carthage, an important city on the eastern Mediterranean coast, founded in the 9th century BC by the Phoenician queen Dido. Visit Byrsa hill, birthplace of the first city of Carthage, where the oldest Punic remains are still found, then the Baths of Antoninus, the best-preserved Roman monument here — public baths from the 2nd century AD, considered one of the most important bathing sites of the Roman empire. Continue to Sidi Bou Said, one of the most beautiful villages of the Mediterranean: a walk through this charming village of little white houses with blue doors and windows, set on a hill overlooking the sea with panoramic views. Return to the hotel in Tunis, à la carte dinner in a restaurant in the medina (Dar el Jeld or similar) and overnight (Hotel El Belvedere Fourati 4* or similar).

3

Day 3 — Hammamet • Sousse • Port El Kantaoui

Seaside time in Hammamet, the Sousse medina and the Port El Kantaoui marina.

View the detailed programme

Breakfast and departure to the beach resort of Hammamet; free time in the town centre and a walk by the sea. Continue to the seaside city of Sousse to enjoy free time in its medina, with its souk and Mediterranean colours. Included lunch in a typical local restaurant. In the afternoon, arrive at the Port El Kantaoui marina with free time to stroll and have a drink. Arrival at the hotel in the Port El Kantaoui area. Dinner and overnight stay (Iberostar Diar El Andalous 4* or similar).

Day 4 — Kairouan • Mountain oases • Tozeur

The holy city of Kairouan, then 4x4 to the mountain oases and a Star Wars film location.

View the detailed programme

Breakfast and departure to the holy city of Kairouan, the first Arab city in all of North Africa and also known as the fourth holy city of Islam. There we will visit the Aghlabid basins, 9th-century water reservoirs; the Great Mosque, one of the most important buildings in the country and the Muslim world, notable for its more than 400 columns; and the Mausoleum of the Barber, also known as the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi, which holds the tomb of a companion of the Prophet Muhammad and features Arab-Andalusian architecture. Afterwards, a visit to a carpet workshop — Kairouan is the country's craft capital, home to its finest carpets. Included lunch in a local restaurant along the way, then continue by 4x4 to the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza, crossing the desert and a salt lake to reach the Star Wars film set. Arrival at the hotel in Tozeur, dinner and overnight stay (Hotel El Mouradi Tozeur 4* or similar).

5

Day 5 — Tozeur • Chott El Jerid • Douz

A calèche ride in the Nefta palm grove, the Chott El Jerid salt lake and the desert at Douz.

View the detailed programme

Breakfast and departure to the small village of Nefta for a calèche (horse-drawn carriage) ride through the largest and most beautiful palm grove in southern Tunisia. Continue to the centre of Tozeur to walk through its old quarter, with its distinctive architecture, and around the town centre. After the included lunch, departure to the town of Douz — the gateway to the desert — crossing the spectacular Chott El Jerid salt lake, 250 km long and 20 km wide, the largest salt flat in the Sahara. On arrival in Douz, you will have the chance to take an optional ride over the sand dunes by quad and on camelback. Dinner in the desert under tents. Overnight stay (El Mouradi Douz 4* or similar).
